The Animation Industry is one that houses many specialist positions and the blanket term of ‘animator’ often confuses those that are not fully aware of this. Animation Clean Up Artists are Masters of Line Art and they truly understand how to draw Clean Lines and maintain form and volume. The competent Character Animator must also have an understanding of these things in order to maximise the results when passing on rough animation to a clean up artist. This is why the art of animation Tie Down is incredibly important

Cleaning up rough Drawings has proven to be a major headache for many beginners and intermediates. Initially on a high about the potential of their lively and flowing roughs, they are soon brought crashing down to the depths of the earth by their attempts to finalise the lineart of their animation. A painfully rigid, bumpy and stiff display that constantly shifts in form and volume leaves them scratching their heads to the point of pulling their hair in frustration as to how did something that started out so beautiful turn out to be such a bitter disappointment.

How To Draw Clean Lines
There are a number of reasons that errors occur when attempting animation clean up. These include not understanding the order of which drawings should be cleaned first, Not having total knowledge of the characters construction and model and not defining the animation arcs. Many beginners feel they know how to draw clean lines and start by simply tracing over their roughs as though it was a process of illustration. This is a very damaging approach that results in line inconsistency and loss of form and volume. Cleaning up Animation Line Art is an entirely different discipline to illustration and has to be approached in a different manner.
